How the birth sky map is made

  1. Find your birthplace. The city you type is converted to latitude and longitude, and the time zone is looked up from those coordinates.
  2. Convert your birth time to UTC so the sky is computed for the exact instant you were born.
  3. Compute the Sun, Moon and planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) with the open-source astronomy-engine library: altitude, right ascension, declination, Moon phase, sunrise and sunset.
  4. Project 8,404 stars from the Yale Bright Star Catalog (to magnitude 6.5, the naked-eye limit) onto a circular map of the sky above you, with constellation lines.
  5. Download the result as an HD PNG poster or share a link that recreates it.

Birth Sky Map: frequently asked questions

What is a birth sky map?

A birth sky map is a picture of the night sky exactly as it was above the place you were born, at the moment you were born. M-Astro computes it from real astronomical data and lets you download it as an HD PNG poster.

What details do I need to make my birth sky map?

Your date of birth, your time of birth in 24-hour format (for example 14:30), and the city and country where you were born. The time zone is worked out automatically from the location.

How accurate is the M-Astro star map?

Star positions come from the Yale Bright Star Catalog (8,404 stars down to magnitude 6.5, roughly everything visible to the naked eye). Sun, Moon and planet positions are computed with the open-source astronomy-engine library, which is accurate to about one arcminute.

What does the birth sky report include?

The Sun sign, Sun altitude, sunrise, sunset and day length; the Moon phase, illumination percentage and whether the Moon was above the horizon; the constellations of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn; the visible constellations; and the latitude, longitude and UTC time used.

Is the Birth Sky Map astrology?

No. It is an astronomy tool that shows where celestial objects actually were. It lists your Sun sign for reference, but it does not make astrological predictions.

Is my birth data private?

Yes. Date and time never leave your browser and nothing is stored. Only the place name is sent to the Photon geocoder (OpenStreetMap data) to find its coordinates; if that fails, a built-in list of major cities is used.
