Panchang: frequently asked questions
What is a Panchang?
The Panchang is the traditional Hindu almanac for a given day and place. Its five limbs are the tithi (lunar day), vaara (weekday), nakshatra (the Moon’s star), yoga and karana.
What is Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal is a roughly 90-minute window each day, fixed by weekday, that is traditionally avoided for starting important new work. M-Astro computes it from the exact sunrise and sunset for your place.
What is Choghadiya?
Choghadiya divides the day and night into eight parts each, labelled good (Amrit, Shubh, Labh), neutral (Char) or to avoid (Rog, Kaal, Udveg), and is used to pick an auspicious time to begin something.
What are tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana?
Tithi is the lunar day (from the Moon–Sun angle), nakshatra is the star the Moon is in, yoga is a combined Sun–Moon value, and karana is a half-tithi. Together they describe the quality of the day.
Do you store my location?
No. The Panchang is computed in your browser; only the place name is sent to the Photon geocoder (OpenStreetMap) to find its coordinates. Nothing is stored.
