Overview
A deep, intuitive star associated with insight and hidden knowledge. In classical Vedic texts it is counted as the 9th of the 27 Nakshatras, ruled by Mercury with Nagas as its presiding deity.
Symbol & associations
Its symbol is the coiled serpent, which tradition reads as an image of the star’s spirit. Its commonly listed associations are the colour black-red, the number 5 and the gemstone emerald — things some people like to keep near them as a small reminder of their star, nothing more.
Ruling planet & deity
Ashlesha is ruled by Mercury, which in a Vedic chart stands for your thinking, speech and skills. Its presiding deity is Nagas. In classical texts the ruling planet is said to colour the general “flavour” of the star — but remember this describes a traditional category, not you personally.
Gana (temperament group)
Every Nakshatra is grouped into one of three ganas. Ashlesha belongs to the Rakshasa gana — the “fierce” temperament — traditionally seen as strong-willed, protective and determined. These groupings are a broad traditional idea used when comparing charts; they are not a judgement of anyone’s character.
How to use this
Treat this page as a friendly introduction to the symbolism around Ashlesha — a way to learn the tradition, not a forecast. Two people born under the same star can live completely different lives. If something here resonates, enjoy it as one small lens; if it doesn’t, let it go.
